Celebration of Student Authors

Hi everyone!
We held our annual Celebration of Student Authors this Tuesday night at my school.
I always love this event. Each of the students in our school has a published piece showcased. Parents are invited to come in and view the students' work and leave "kind comments for the author." I put together a slide show of pictures that show students K-4 working through the writing process. I also added a video this year of my students teaching other kids about the steps of the writing process. It was amazing! My students absolutely loved doing this project and learned so much about themselves as writers, speakers, and listeners. The parents were amazed at what their children are capable of as well.  Below are some pics of the books that my students and others in our school showcased. I will post the video of my class this weekend at some point.
Happy Memorial Day!

Writing Like a Scientist...TC Lead Teacher Group

This week I had the opportunity to meet with the members of my fantastic TC "Lead Teacher" group for our final meeting of this school year...
We engaged in a lengthy discussion about "close reading" of text and how important it is that we (K-2 Teachers) add it to our repertoire of teaching strategies.
We also worked on lessons that revolved around having students "write like scientists."
We shared some of our own teaching strategies and lessons as well.  I shared the strategy STOP THINK REACT. Below are some of the organizers and charts that I used while teaching science in my classroom. Enjoy!

Strategies and organizers for Inquiry...

Below is the sheet of labels that I used to reinforce the strategy during small group work... for those students who needed the visual reinforcement.  I created the labels on POST-IT labels.
