Persuasive Unit of Study

Our next writing unit will focus on opinion writing with a persuasive twist. After lots of reading and research, I think I am going to focus on having my students work on book reviews and brochures. We are beginning our study of weather and I think it is so important to keep kids going with inquiry as well. We will start with a word hunt and a couple of  immersion activities this week. It will look a little like this:
Day 1: Introduce the "Weather" topic/theme…have students explore browsing baskets full of texts related to the theme. They will record what they notice.
Day 2: Content Word Hunt: Students will once again filter through texts in browsing baskets…they will locate "power" words that might "fuel" their work in the upcoming unit. These words will be added to our classroom "content" word wall.
